Place Vendôme is one of the most beautiful squares of Paris. It testifies to the splendour of the French classic art under the reigns of Louis XV. It illustrates the aesthetic principles which chaired during the period and which one also finds in Versailles: the sense of greatness, underlined by the simplicity of lines and the purity of forms.
Situated in the courtyard outside the Ministry of Defence on Place Vendome is the impressive Austerlitz Column. The Column is comprised of a stone core, encased in the bronze of 1250 cannons captured at the Battle of Austerliz (1805). It was designed by Denon, Gondouin, and Lepère and modeled in the style of Trajan's Column in Rome.
